Flora & Fauna Field Tour

Panama
Tour Itinerary

Jan. 18 - 30,  2012

Our first four days will be spent in the beautiful mountain area of El Valle where we will bird in primary rain forest within steps of a paved road. Species to be seen here include Brown-billed Scythebill, Streak-chested Antpitta, Purplish-backed Quail-Dove, Orange-bellied Trogon, Spotted Barbtail, and Ochraceous Wren.

We next descend to the Panama Canal area near Panama City to the lowland forests of the Gamboa area. The world-known trail of Pipeline Road will be hiked to find animals and rare birds, including Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo, Agami Heron, Sun Grebe, Crested Owl, White-tipped Sicklebill, Pacific Ant Wren, Wing-banded Antbird, Sapayoa, Blue Cotinga, Green Shrike-Vireo and many trogons and hummingbirds.

Our final destination for another four days is situated on the Caribbean side of the Panama area, near Colon. This is the beautiful Sierra Llonera Lodge, with its lovely grounds, streams and pools. Highlights here could be Sulphur-rumped Tanager, Fulvous-vented Euphonia, various hummingbirds, owls and tanagers. Our stay here will include one day at the near-by, well-known location of Achiote Road, where we should see Capuchin and Howler Monkeys, Red-breasted Blackbird, White-headed Wren, Spot-crowned Barbet, Bare-crowned Antbird and Mustached Antwren. Other possibilities include Tiny Hawk, Crested Eagle and Pied Puff Bird.

At the end of the twelve day tour, we will make the short drive back to Panama City Airport for our flights home.

Those wishing to take the five day extension to the Darien will leave by plane that day to the town of Cana, where they will be transported to the nearby lodge where we hope to see many bird and animal species more associated with the neighbouring country of Columbia. However, we will be able to search for these in a much safer situation. Some of the highlights may include Solitary and Harpy Eagles, Great Curassow, Choco Tinamou, Dusky-backed Jacamar, Violet-throated Toucanet, Beautiful Treerunner, Varied Solitaire, Black-tipped Cotinga, Stripe-throated Wren, White-eared Conebill, Tody Motmot, Barred Puffbird, Pirre Warbler, Pirre Bush-Tanager, and Viridian Dachnis. Regularly seen should be four species of Macaw: Great Green, Red-and-green, Blue-and-Yellow, and Chestnut-fronted.

This entire extension will be organized and run for us by Ancon Expeditions, who have been leading trips to the Darien for many years.
